Aussies are OK with Jesus: PerthNOW

Australian Religious Beliefs
With the Easter period here, it is often a time when Christianity attracts a greater media attention. This article at PerthNOW reveals some interesting research regarding Australian’s religious beliefs.

The nationwide study shows eight out of 10 people accept that Jesus died on the cross and 52 per cent believe he rose from the dead.

“From the marketing world and certain areas of the media, you’d get a sense that Christianity is finished and it (Easter) is all about holidays and chocolates and Easter eggs, but four in five people accept the message of Easter, that Jesus died on the cross, as a historical occurrence,” said social researcher Mark McCrindle.

“This idea of a 21st century sceptical secular mind dominating is not accurate,” Mr McCrindle said.

Overall, 40 per cent described themselves as Christians, with a further 19 per cent saying they were spiritual but had no religion. Nearly a third did not identify with any religion or spiritual belief.

“The research shows people are fine with Jesus, but they have issues with the church. They like the product but they don’t like the retail outlet,” Mr McCrindle said.

Even among those who identified as religious, a quarter did not practise their faith and 42 per cent rarely, if ever, worshipped as part of a group.

Fifty years ago, about a quarter of Australians attended church regularly. That’s fallen to about one in 13.

“Our Aussie approach to religion is, like everything else, a bit laid-back,” Mr McCrindle said. “It’s an identity. It’s not an activity and more about who you are than what you do.”

The survey looked at “belief blockers” to engaging in religion and found the biggest were church abuse, hypocrisy, judging others, religious wars and suffering.

Whilst this is a fairy small sample size there are some important points to take away for the praying church.

  • We must be encouraged that God is at work in our midst, regardless of what new-atheism and radical secularists will like to tell us. Belief is still present in Australia.
  • Although many Australians hold a form of belief, it seems that belief is very loosely shaped in terms of a living faith.
  • There are real reasons why people fail to embrace faith in Jesus, and these go beyond those stated. At the core of our spiritual malaise are spiritual causes – pride, rebellion, deception, self-centredness and more

Let’s continue to pray for Perth and the nation of Australia. God is at work here, we have heritage in the Christian faith – let’s pray that the seeds of faith planted over many decades be watered and will germinate and grow in the hearts and lives of Aussies. Jesus came, died and rose again for Australians and the mandate he has for this great nation.

“Lord move in the hearts of Australians, draw men and women, boys and girls, to the radical, life-changing faith you call us to. Forgive us of our pride, rebellion and self-sufficiency. Holy Spirit sweep through this land making dry places live again! Thank you for your promise and purpose for Australia. Revive us and fulfil it Jesus! Amen”

Perth Fastest Growing in Nation: A Sign of Perth’s Apostolic Mandate

Perth Apostolic MandateWAToday.com.au is reporting that Perth is growing at the fastest rate in Australia:

The urban fringes of Perth and Melbourne made up six of the top 10 fastest growing areas across Australia during 2010-11, continuing the trend that is seeing more people move further from cities.

The north coastal LGA of Wanneroo experienced the largest population growth in the state, with more than 6200 new people (a 4.2 per cent increase).

The City of Stirling, which takes in suburbs including Mt Lawley, Innaloo, Balcatta and Scarborough, recorded the second largest population growth, with 4000 more people (a 2 per cent increase).

It was followed by Rockingham (3900 more people, a 3.7 per cent increase), Mandurah (3700 more people, a 5.3 per cent increase) and Armadale (3300 more people, a 5.4 per cent increase).

The Lord is bringing people to our city. There is a move to Perth from right across the globe. The Lord is bringing gifts, callings and abilities to become established in this city. Why is this? I believe this is to fulfil the apostolic calling and mandate upon our city.

Perth’s destiny is to be a missionary sending sending to the world. First the nations will come and then they will return to the nations taking with them what they have received from this place.

This makes it vital that Perth wakes up and responds to the call of God upon it. Pray for a deep and wide ranging move of God in our city. Pray for the Holy Spirit to convict and draw hearts. Pray for churches to be prepared coming into divine order. Pray for the zeal of the Lord to consume this generation for evangelism and missions.

Perth among top 10 fastest growing cities (PerthNow)

Perth Western Australia PrayerPerthNow is reporting that Perth is among the top 10 fastest growing cities on the planet according to growth in GDP. Brisbane was the top ranked city in the world, with Perth featuring eighth.

The survey was done by property company Jones Lang Lasalle.

This is a good reminder to pray along the following lines -

  • The raising up of “Cyrus” and “Daniel” type leaders in the marketplace of Perth
  • For the release of new finances into the kingdom of God for both at home and in the nations missions work
  • The preparation and ordering of the Church in Perth to fulfil it’s mandate as a “city of light” and to raise up, equip and release five fold and marketplace ministers and leaders to that end

“Thank you Lord for Perth. We thank you that your face shines upon us and that your goodness and grace is so evident to us. We pray your blessing upon this place and that it be used for your purposes and not wasted on covetous living, nor would it cause a hardening of hearts toward you. Lord be at work in your church, bring us into your purpose for Perth, we ask in Jesus name, Amen.”

A Word for 2012: What Are You Expecting For 2012

In this post at brucechant.com there are number of important themes the Lord is speaking to us about in the city of Perth, for 2012.

1. The Divergence of Light and Darkness
…There is now a need to consider carefully how we speak and how we act because in doing so we increasingly choose and align ourselves with the forces of darkness and light. This will be a time for Daniels, men and women of integrity and boldness, to stand and come into the Lord’s promotion.

2. Boldness in Evangelism
…There will be bright and shining lamps lighting up in dark places, attracting those in search of truth, liberty and healing. Now is the time, to be bold and step out in faith.

3. Everything being ADDED
Luke 12:31 says “Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you” … One of those will be of increase, stolen things being added back with interest, a double portion in the land (Isaiah 61:7) will be yours.

A Word for Perth in 2012: The Boy Who Fell Asleep and Died

Ps Paul Botha, Senior Pastor of One Church Perth has posted a prophetic word for Perth in 2012. It is based upon the account of Eutychus, the boy who fell asleep, fell out of a window and died whilst under the ministry of the Apostle Paul in Acts 20:7-12.

“Just so, the Church in Perth has fallen asleep to the urgency of the hour. Wearied from busy-ness, and losing the fight to stay watchful and prayerful, many in the Church in Perth are dozing and nodding off, even while being on watch on the walls. Some have even fallen asleep, but they are not even aware of it (as we never are, until somebody wakes us up!).”

“The Boy Who Fell Asleep And Died” A word for the church in Perth for 2012 – Ps Paul Botha

This is an important message for all of the church in Perth in 2012. I commend this message to you, that it may fuel your prayers in 2012.

Perth: “Resources Boom Cuts Deep” WA Today

From WA Today, a feature article on the effects the resource boom is having on our city. The most notable effects are economic, however there is evidence the positive effects of the boom are being felt in just a narrow band of the community. This is creating cost-stresses elsewhere as prices and living costs increase.

PRAY:

1. That Perth will fulfil it’s heavenly destiny and be the city God wants it to be.

2. That the church would be wisely and strategically placed to benefit from the resources boom, and thus able to be a blessing.
